2020 Toyota Highlander: All-New Bolder & More Athletic Design
The 2020 Toyota Highlander has been redesigned from the ground up—literally. Its bolder design starts with the addition of available 20-inch alloy wheels. The new black front grille is a bigger, bolder version of what you saw in the 2019 RAV4, showcasing this SUV’s athletic appeal.
Toyota increased the overall body length of the Highlander so that you can enjoy more rear cargo space. There will now be 16.1 cubic feet of cargo area behind the third row of seats, increased from 13.8 cubic feet in the outgoing model.
2020 Toyota Highlander: Modern Amenities
Continuing the tour inside, you’ll once again find seats available in woven cloth, SofTex® premium synthetic leather, or perforated leather trim. The specifics vary depending on trim level. As an example, the Highlander XLE will come with:
- 10-way power driver’s seat
- 4-way power front passenger’s seat
- Heated front seats
- SofTex® leather trim
As always, the Highlander will offer standard seating for eight with a 2nd-row bench seat. Available 2nd-row captain’s chairs turn this bold SUV into a 7-seater while offering more comfort for your passengers. Plus, Limited and Platinum add ambient LED lighting to add to their premium feel.
You’ll be able to connect to your choice of multimedia, thanks to standard features like Android Auto™, Apple CarPlay®, SiriusXM® Radio, Waze, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. An 8-inch touchscreen display makes finding what you need a breeze. Upgraded multimedia systems offer even more connectivity options, plus a sizeable 12.3-inch landscape display.
2020 Toyota Highlander Performance and Handling
If you liked the 3.5L V6 engine in the 2019 Highlander, you’re in luck: This 295-horsepower engine will now come standard in the 2020 model. When you choose the available towing package, which adds things like an engine oil cooler and Trailer Sway Control, you’ll be able to tow 5,000 pounds.
All-wheel drive models will continue to divide torque between front and rear wheels as needed. The addition of available Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive (TV-AWD) takes performance up a notch: This system can send torque to either the left or right rear wheel as conditions dictate. The result is better handling around corners and increased traction in the snow.
Highly Efficient 2020 Highlander Hybrid
The 2020 Highlander Hybrid, meanwhile, will be more efficient than ever before. It starts with a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine. Then, it adds not one but two compact electric motors to increase energy recovery when braking. As a result, you’ll get to enjoy 240 combined system horsepower and a Toyota-estimated 35 city/33 highway MPG*.
Thanks to a feature called Predictive Efficient Drive, the 2020 Highlander Hybrid will actually get more efficient the more you drive it. This is because it uses machine learning to analyze your regular routes and driving habits. It then uses this knowledge to help it decide when to charge and discharge the hybrid battery.
Another notable difference for the 2020 hybrid is the availability of 2-wheel drive. Previously, hybrid models were only available with all-wheel drive—but you now have more freedom to choose the performance you want.
